Inglis Classic winner CHOISIR burst into Golden Slipper calculations, with a dazzling turn of foot that left arch rival PILLAGING (2001 Classic $45,000) toiling in his wake. The Paul Perry trained colt presented beautifully in the enclosure, a real two year old type with a clear advantage of size and strength over many of his competitors.
"He'd have to be the best horse I've ever had racing as a two year old and there's still plenty of improvement left in him," said Perry, of the colt he had selected and purchased for just $55,000 at the Classic Yearling Sale 12 months ago.
Melbourne visitor Pillaging looked to be a good thing as the field turned for home, but once Choisir saw daylight that was the end of the section.
Four time Golden Slipper winning trainer Lee Freedman, who prepares the runner-up, declared, "The winner looks like a Golden Slipper horse to me. We dropped the others pretty easily at the 200m and he dropped us just as easily. I think the form will be all right from this race. We were beaten fair and square. If we'd swapped barriers maybe it would be a different result, but I don't think so."
The Barbara Joseph trained runner MUKAREENA (2001 Classic $12,000) gave his excited group of more than 20 owners plenty to cheer about with another brave run for third and will no doubt go on to win his share of races.
Greg Hickman, the only trainer with two runners in the event was well pleased with SPORTSMAN's (2001 Classic $8,000) effort to finish fourth. Ridden further forward than he probably likes, the colt battled on well and will now go for a short break.
