157. Stallions on the move

19/02/2002

There’s plenty more action on the stallion scene too, with Viscount retired from racing and multiple Group Two winner King Cugat added to the shuttle roster, while Hurricane Sky and Archway are on the move.

Viscount, winner of six races, including three at Group One level, suffered a serious leg injury after resuming with a second in the AJC Expressway Stakes-Gr2 and will stand the 2002 season at Woodlands Stud.

By Quest For Fame from the Sir Tristram mare Antwerp (family of Octagonal and co), Viscount was Champion Australian 2YO with victories in the AJC Sires’ Produce-Gr1 and Champagne Stakes-Gr1, won the AJC George Main Stakes-Gr1 and finished third to Northerly and Sunline in the MVRC WS Cox Plate-Gr1 last spring, before ending his career with six wins and $1.3 million in stakes.

World famous Widden Stud has secured King Cugat — winner of four Group races and placed in five Group Ones — for 2002 at a fee of $17,500. Standing the son of Kingmambo in partnership with Gerry Harvey’s Baramul Stud, King Cugat is from a half-sister to Champion Sire Seeking The Gold. Kingmambo, a son of Mr Prospector, is also sire of Darley Stud’s English 2000 Guineas-Gr1 winner King’s Best.

Hurricane Sky, who will fit in nicely to the elite stallion structure at Arrowfield Stud, moves down the road from Wakefield Stud, where he has stood since 1996, covering 89 mares last season at a fee of $20,000. Last season was a crackerjack 12 months for Hurricane Sky (whose oldest progeny are 4YOs) with Desert Sky (VATC CF Orr Stakes-Gr1), Desert Eagle, Continuum, Crystal Finale and Slipstream all successful at stakes level.

Archway is one of two new additions to the Independent Stallion Station’s lineup (last week we reported on the acquisition of Raise A Grand) and a welcome one at that.

With a strike rate over 62%, Archway is the sire of a number of outstanding performers, including Group One winners Grand Archway (four Gr1s including VRC and AJC Oaks) and Rose Archway (AJC Oaks), the ill-fated Go Flash Go (VRC Craiglee Stakes-Gr2) and stakeswinners Ella Nico, Shoeless, Mighty Way, Gracco and Winning Scene.
