128. Victorian Breeders Need To Support Premier Sale               13/02/2002

The major message of this year's sale was the need for Victorian breeders to support the William Inglis and Son Melbourne Premier Yearling sales with better quality yearlings, according to Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria.

TBV President Mike Becker said that while the increase in sales average of 8% was extremely pleasing in a year of tighter sales returns, there was an obvious need for more yearlings of high commercial quality.

"I think the Melbourne sale proved beyond doubt that it can attract the buyers but the message from most was that there were not enough correct high-quality yearlings, Becker said.

"It was pleasing that this year 13 yearlings reached over $100,000 but it could have been a lot more had the right horses been there.
"I don't think breeders need fear entering the quality yearlings they would normally send to other sales.

"The other encouraging feature of the sale was the strength in the middle market which has clearly been missing at other sales. Competition was strong on nice yearlings and there was a solid local demand for these horses. The Victorian trainers were very active which reflects the strength of the racing industry in this State."

TBV initiatives to attract buyers to the sale were well received. Funds raised from the TBV stallion raffle last year were directed into sponsoring a breeders marquee at the sale, the TBV Cocktail Party and Awards night which was well supported, and as incentives for interstate buyers to come to the sale.

"TBV is especially grateful for the assistance of Super Vobis, Inside Racing and the Carlton and United Breweries in sponsoring the Cocktail Party," Becker said.

He also paid tribute to the input of Wm Inglis and the Wakeful Club in their respective functions as a prelude to the sale. These functions went a long way to creating a much better atmosphere at the sale and resulted in the record crowd in attendance at the opening session on Sunday in spite of inclement weather.

TBV also paid tribute to the interest shown in the sale by Racing Minister Mr Rob Hulls who attended as guest speaker at the Wakeful Club luncheon and the opening selling session.

"We are so lucky to have a Racing Minister who recognises the role of breeders as the base of the whole racing industry, which is so vitally financially important to Victoria," Becker said.

"We thank Mr Hulls for taking the time to be a part of this event."

Collingrove Stud in Victoria has secured a coup by announcing that Champion sire SCENIC (IRE) will return to their Nagambie base for the 2002 season.

Scenic, by Sadler's Wells is one of Australia's leading stallions, finishing third to Danehill and Zabeel on the Australian General Sires' List in 1998-99, sixth in

"As a proven established Australian-based sire he commands great respect and will enhance the breeding industry in the state of Victoria," said Collingrove Marketing Manager Jenny McAlpine. "He is the complete sire-he gets top juveniles, older staying horses and Group winning colts and fillies. He looks a very promising broodmare sire in the making as well" she added.

Scenic, a Gr 1 winner at two and winner of 4 races in 11 starts is sire of 262 individual winners (73% winners to runners), 30 stakes winners, 25 stakes placed, and progeny earnings of over $25 million in Australasia alone.
