"King of the Kids"…

Recruiting wins Inglis Premier for Bede Murray

"King of the Kids" ….it’s the title so often bestowed on trainers who have the knack of coaxing juvenile thoroughbreds into winning form. It sits easily on the shoulders of South Coast mentor Bede Murray following wins in the $500,000 Inglis Premier with Recruiting and STC Silver Slipper Stakes Gr 2, with under rated filly VICTORY VEIN (2001 Sires’ Produce PI $32,500).

Bargain buy Recruiting, swept away memories of a best forgotten spring, with an exciting last stride rush to victory, beating the Jim Marconi trained runner PEACE RULER (2001 Autumn $52,000)and Kiwi visitor ORONOKO (2001 Premier $57,500) prepared by Mandy Brown.

Bede Murray purchased Recruiting for just $15,000 and to this day can’t believe his good fortune.

"He’s a lovely colt, the best temperament, you can do anything with him," he said.

Right from the start he showed ability and it was just before Christmas when Murray rang the William Inglis office in Sydney to check that he had paid the acceptance for Recruiting in the Inglis Premier race. He was informed that all was in order and it wasn’t long before the colt zoomed to the top of the list of contenders.

"We’ve certainly had some luck in these Inglis races," declared Murray, who won the 1999 $600,000 Inglis Classic with Cutabove and finished second with Donna Dior in the 2000 $1 million Inglis Heroic Championship.

"I just hope Reg keeps putting them on!" he added with a laugh.

Recruiting is by former champion European two year old Celtic Swing (GB) from the County mare Chacolet and was offered for sale by Collingrove Stud as agent for Balcrest Stud, owned by Peter Haigh in South Australia.

Bel Esprit to Define Blue Diamond

They say that life is a series of defining moments and that when they arrive, you either define the moment or it will define you. For Bel Esprit that moment is coming up fast and on March 23rd at Caufield, connections believe the colt will be ready to define the moment.

"Bring on the Blue Diamond, I'm ready," said an excited John Symons, after Bel Esprit had romped to his fourth successive victory in the VATC Blue Diamond Prelude Gr 3.

"He's pretty much there. He's 100 per cent."

Part owner Kevin Sheedy was in Sydney for a pre-season trial match with his team Essendon.

"I've earned more money in four minutes with this horse, that I did in my whole football career," he joked, when questioned on Bel Esprit's win at half time.

Emerald Dream Comes True

Blue blooded mare EMERALD DREAM broke through for her first Group One victory at Te Rapa on Saturday, taking out the Whakanui Stud International Stakes for the Murray Baker stable, with the amazing Scott Seamer in the saddle.

Emerald Dream is in foal to Zabeel and is likely to have just one more start, so time was running out to grab that precious Group One trophy. She has limitless commercial appeal as a broodmare, being a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Danewin, by Danehill (USA) from the ill fated Theme Song, who died in 1999. Her third dam is the illustrious Eight Carat (GB), who has founded a dynasty that needs no introduction in this part of the world.

You've got to hand it to the Eight Carat clan, earlier in the week there was the disappointment of star family member Viking Ruler being benched for the remainder of the season and then out of nowhere, Emerald Dream steps up to the plate.

The Eight Carat family will have three representatives catalogued for Easter this year: Lot 349, a Danehill (USA) colt from Peruzzi (NZ); Lot 253, a Peintre Celebre (USA) colt from La Brillante; and Lot 11, a Zabeel colt from Abbaye.

Inglis Graduates in Hong Kong

Ex-Sydneysider John Size continued his great winning run in Hong Kong with a smart victory for promising three year old WINNING DRAGON (2000 Premier $50,000) at Happy Valley on Wednesday night. The son of Snippets is the first living foal of the Straight Strike (USA) mare Spring Hit (NZ), a descendant of prolific broodmare Gay Poss, winner of the AJC Oaks in 1970. This is the family of outstanding performers Grosvenor, Mahaya and current superstar, Lonhro.

Size was most impressed with Winning Dragon. "He is a very professional racehorse who has clicked into gear very quickly. It isn't easy to win two out of four, especially here. You know it is something, how certain breeds just thrive here," he said.

"Snippets is a good stallion in Australia but he is a much better one in Hong Kong. There are probably a few theories but I think as much as anything else it has to do with the attitude of his progeny. Nothing bothers them, they have a great temperament for the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong."

Unfortunately for Hong Kong buyers, the Snippets progeny are now a limited edition following his sad death last month. His current crop of yearlings will be followed by 90 live foals resulting from the 2000 breeding season. Last spring Snippets covered 122 mares due to foal later this year, with that final offering set to hit the sale ring in 2004.

The 2002 Australian Easter Yearling Sale will feature 10 youngsters by Snippets and eight of them are colts. Highlights include Lot 149, a three-quarter brother-in-blood to Group One winning sprinter and promising young sire Spartacus; also Lot 303, a three-quarter brother-in-blood to brilliant speedster Scandinavia, from the stakes-winning mare Midnight Sun.
