113. Recruiting wins Inglis Premier for Bede Murray

12/02/2002

“King of the Kids” ….it’s the title so often bestowed on trainers who have the knack of coaxing juvenile thoroughbreds into winning form. It sits easily on the shoulders of South Coast mentor Bede Murray following wins in the $500,000 Inglis Premier with Recruiting and STC Silver Slipper Stakes Gr 2 with under rated filly VICTORY VEIN (2001 Sires’ Produce PI $32,500).

Bargain buy Recruiting, swept away memories of a best forgotten spring, with an exciting last stride rush to victory, beating the Jim Marconi trained runner PEACE RULER (2001 Autumn $52,000)and Kiwi visitor ORONOKO (2001 Premier $57,500) prepared by Mandy Brown.

Bede Murray purchased Recruiting for just $15,000 and to this day can’t believe his good fortune.

“He’s a lovely colt, the best temperament, you can do anything with him,” he said.

Right from the start he showed ability and it was just before Christmas when Murray rang the William Inglis office in Sydney to check that he had paid the acceptance for Recruiting in the Inglis Premier race. He was informed that all was in order and it wasn’t long before the colt zoomed to the top of the list of contenders.

“We’ve certainly had some luck in these Inglis races,” declared Murray, who won the 1999 $600,000 Inglis Classic with Cutabove and finished second with Donna Dior in the 2000 $1 million Inglis Heroic Championship.

“I just hope Reg keeps putting them on!” he added with a laugh.

Recruiting is by former champion European two year old Celtic Swing (GB) from the County mare Chacolet and was offered for sale by Collingrove Stud as agent for Balcrest Stud. Collingrove Stud have another outstanding draft of yearlings on offer at Premier this year highlighted by the lone Danehill (USA) in the sale, a colt from the stakes-winning Sir Tristram (IRE) mare Captiva (NZ) (Lot 302).

Celtic Swing (GB) has just two yearlings on offer this year, Lot 114, a colt from the At Talaq (USA) mare Pitch, a half-sister to classy sprinter Natural Tycoon; and Lot 376, a colt from stakes-placed juvenile Fun in the Chateau.
