 9. Good season for Australian bred sires  30/07/2001

Australian bred sires again had a very good season with Newhaven Park Stud, Boorowa, located Zeditave holding down fourth place, Flying Spur seventh and Marscay lying eighth in the money statistics. Each of these sires were brilliant Group One winners with Zeditave winning the Futurity Stakes, Lightning Stakes and Blue Diamond Stakes in Melbourne and Flying Spur and Marscay both succeeding in the Golden Slipper.

The deceased Widden Stud sire Marscay had another grand season overall not only finishing high up on the general sire’s list but taking out the broodmare championship for the second successive year and finishing second leading sire of juveniles. This grandson of Star Kingdom has career statistics of over 430 winners 100 races and $40million – a record for an Australian bred sire.

Flying Spur, the leading two year old sire, is one of two Golden Slipper winners by Danehill which are two of the best young sires in Australia as his son Danzero also had earners of nearly $2million. Both at the Arrowfield Stud near Scone, they are among seven sons of Danehill which had metropolitan winners during the racing year, sharing this distinction with Danwin (Emirates Park, Murrurundi), the New Zealand based Danasinga, the Ireland bred Danehill Dancer (Collingrove, Ngambie, Victoria), Queensland’s Dantibes (Markam Stud, Westbrook) and the Tasmanian importation Ladoni (now at Greta West Stud in Victoria). Although the oldest Danehills were only nine- years old in the 2000-01 racing year, he already has over forty sons at stud and is expected to establish a sire dynasty to rival that of Star Kingdom.
