 8. Danehill towers over the rest  30/07/2001

In the racing year just finished the dual hemisphere sire Danehill has again towered over the rest as the most dominant force in the supply of quality Australian racehorses, finishing on top of three sire’s lists.

Due here in August on his twelfth successive visit to the Hunter Valley, this son of the spectacular Northern Dancer influence Danzig had nearly one hundred winners over 160 races and $7.8 million through the 2000-01 season. In the process, he captured his fifth Australian sire’s premiership on earnings, led the juvenile list for the sixth time and that for most number of individual winners for the second successive year.

Used on the historic Hunter Valley River nurtured Arrowfield property at Jerry’s Plains every year starting in 1990, first under the direction of John Messara established Arrowfield Stud organisation and then with the giant international Coolmore group, Danehill has now had eight Australian crops of go to the races and on the home front they have included over 300 winners of 950 races and $53million.

His locally bred progeny has also included Hong Kong superstar Fairy King Prawn and other overseas winners. He has also had eleven Northern Hemisphere seasons in Ireland and one in Japan and all told has had over 600 winners around the world. They have earned in excess of $110million and included at least 149 stakes winners.

Danehill’s Australian earnings for the 2000-01 season alone are over three times the total amount picked up by the offspring of Star Kingdom in his long career at the Baramul Stud in the Widden Valley. Five times premier Australian sire and seven times leading juvenile sire, Star Kingdoms statistics for Australian racing added up to 261 winners of 1168 races and earnings of $2,347,058.

The now 15-years-old Danehill claimed the latest sire’s premiership on earnings by more then $2million over his nearest rivals, two former Hunter Valley sires in the Sadler’s Wells product Scenic (now in Western Australia) and the shuttle sire Brief Truce.
