7. Brilliant Research By Australian Postgraduates 06/07/2001 |
|
On Wednesday,4th July 2001at the International Horse Industry Symposium, 12 outstanding research papers were presented by postgraduates now studying at five of Australia's major universities. Speaking before an audience that included Professor Rex Butterfield, Professor Reubon Rose, Professor Leo Jeffcott and Dr. Peter Rossdale, graduates, breeders and industry participants, the audience was most appreciative at the quality and the diverse nature of the papers. Special awards were presented to Kathy French from the University of Queensland for her research on laminitis and also to Nicholas Malikides for his research relating to air sampling for Rattles. There were numerous papers that were most relevant to breeders including a paper with disturbing consequences relating to the vaccination of mares and weanlings to counter Herpes virus 1 and Herpes virus 4.
The paper relating to rattles, when concluded, could enable farms to measure the air for rattles in yards which young foals utilize ...it would require the commercialization of a measuring device that may be as useful as the foaling alarms.
Caroline Foot presented a paper that described serological responses of mares and weanlings following vaccination with an inactivated whole virus Equine Herpes virus 1 and Equine Herpes virus 4 vaccine. The mares and the weanlings that were tested were of various ages but the conclusion at this stage is that the vaccine is far from a 100% bet to stop the virus. The study is most important in that gives out a very clear warning that proper farm practices must always be maintained to ensure that the effects of a mare that has aborted can be limited.
The TBA is seeking permission to publish on this site some of the outstanding papers from the symposium. |
