Despite a gloomy sale following the upheaval caused by the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre, a brighter development occurred for the Furlong Stud resident sire Irgun.
A colt by Irgun, a half brother to this years Dubai World Cup winner Captain Steve was sold at the Keenland September yearling sale, recording the highest price got on the day of auction US$150,000 ($AUS 300,000). He will be sent to New York to be trained.
The progeny of Irgun continue to fire in the USA, Canada and Japan and there is every indication that the trend will continue in Australia and New Zealand with many trainers putting 'the wraps' on the Irgun youngsters in their charge. An Irgun filly, out of Octroon, trained by Lloyd Hickmott came third at the Doomben trials two weeks ago.
Furlong Stud held their Open Day on 26th August and visitors appreciated viewing this Group One winning chestnut stallion at close quarters. The success of his progeny overseas has encouraged breeders to send quality mares from Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia to Irgun. It is expected that he will serve close to a full book of mares this season ensuring the best is yet to come.
Irgun's Angle, already Group 3 placed, recently won at the tough Bel Mar Racetrack over a 61/2 furlong Allowance race (US$53,000) by 6 lengths. Gal On The Go made a powerful run from the back of the field in the Group 3 Singapore Stakes to challenge and dual with the 2000 Champion 2YO filly and Breeders Cup winner Carressing, eventually finishing in second place by 1 length over 9 furlongs.
Irgun is now the sire of 24 winners from 38 runners (64% ratio) and include 2 Stakes Winners and 2 Stakes placed. Of the 24 winners 13 are fillies and 11 are colts. For enquiries contact Rob or Jim Atkinson on 4697 1129 or 0418 987 509
