Press Release TBA Issues Warning On Viral Abortion
The
President of Thoroughbred Breeders Australia, Mr.Richard Turnley, has issued a
warning to all breeders to be extra vigilant in the care of pregnant mares in
light of an increased number of reported cases of Equine Viral Abortion. Mr.
Turnley stated that breeders have become increasingly responsible in the
diagnosis of all abortions and in the reporting of those caused by the Equine
Herpes Virus-1. The numbers of cases may be the result of this responsible
attitude but it is also possible that some mares may be under additional stress
as a result of the drought conditions in Eastern Australia. The TBA has asked
that all breeders consider foaling their mares on their home stud and moving the
mares and foals later to be mated. Although this may not be an option for
breeders who have to float their mares long distances (thus stressing the foals)
it certainly would assist in making certain that the effect of the virus is
limited.
