Asian
buyers will again be looked on to drive the Australian Breeze Up Sale beyond
last year’s record figures and defy the market downturn currently being
experienced in the northern hemisphere.
Last year, when a new format allowed a greater time between the breeze up
sessions and sale day, the average price climbed by 37 percent to $59,287, with
a top price of $250,000 and a record aggregate of $4,861,500 from 82 lots sold.
This year’s sale at Newmarket on September 27 will be preceded by breeze-up
sessions for the 169 lots at Flemington on September 6 and Randwick on September
9 where the entries will time trial over 200 metres.
The sale boasts only two colts by Danehill plus progeny by many of his sons
including Danzero, Flying Spur, Lion Hunter, Danehill Dancer, Desert King and
Danewin.
The Danehill colt’s are from Alpine Spirit, an unraced half-sister to Schubert
from the family of champion first season sire Lion Hunter; and Soon Ripe, an
imported Grey Dawn mare who is a half-sister to American stakeswinner Fast
Account.
Danehill has twice provided the top selling lot at the Breeze Up Sale, including
the record of $280,000 set in 1997.
Snippets, with seven lots, has the biggest representation while other sires
represented include Grand Lodge, Anabaa, Spinning World, Red Ransom, End Sweep,
Canny Lad, Encosta de Lago, Gilded Time, Marauding, Marscay, Octagonal, Peintre
Celebre, Perugino, Quest for Fame, Rory's Jester, Rubiton, Spectrum, Strategic,
Thunder Gulch and Zeditave.
Group One-winning dams represented include Satin Sand and Zacheline plus half or
full relations to Toledo, Sober Suit, Monopolize, The Lions Roar, Princess
D’Or, Captain Test, Left Bank, Petrouchka and Spirit Of Love.
Yarraman park and Widden Studs have targeted the breeze-up sale with great
success since 1997, providing the top selling colts and filly every year with
two exceptions when Shipton Lodge sold the top colt in 1997 and top filly in
1998.
Yarraman Park, acting as agent for clients, has 31 lots entered for this
year’s sale. Widden will send 16.
Other big drafts come from Vinery Victoria (25 lots) and Mornington Lodge (13).
