Brilliant
two-year-old filly Soviet Song, by Collingrove Victoria shuttle stallion Marju,
is destined for Group One glory when she lines up in the Ascot Meon Valley
Fillies' Mile on September 28.
Quickening clear to take the recent Milcars Sweet Solera Stakes (Listed, 7f), by
a widening three lengths, leading trainer James Fanshawe was glowing in his
praise of the filly, when interviewed by the Racing Post.
"She looks pretty special. She could go to Ascot for the Fillies' Mile. She
really, really travelled today."
The dazzling performance of Soviet Song (ex Kalinka by Soviet Star) was followed
only six days later at Newmarket by another classy double for Marju.
Firstly, the Michael Bell trained, Highclere Thoroughbreds owned two-year-old
colt, Saturn (Marju - Delphinus by Soviet Star) won well over 1400 metres.
Interestingly, both Saturn and Soviet Song are from daughters of the Nureyev
horse, Soviet Star, showing Marju's obvious affinity with the Northern Dancer
line.
Three-year-old filly, Curfew (Marju - Twilight Patrol by Robellino), a
stablemate of Soviet Song, also fulfilled some of her great potential by winning
at Newmarket last Saturday.
"She has always been well thought of and…there could be the promise of
more," trainer James Fanshawe said.
Meanwhile, on the auction front, the progeny of Marju have also been hotly
received.
At this week's annual L'Agence Francaise Deauville Yealing Sale, leading buyer
Peter Doyle purchased two yearlings by Marju, bidding up to 80,000 Euro
(Aus$143,000).
Marju is standing the 2002 breeding season at Collingrove Victoria for a service
fee of $16,500 (inc GST and free return).
