 71. Pivotal To Cheveley’s Success

25/08/2002

Breeders that have retained faith in the great stallion Nureyev as a sire of sires will have had their hearts warmed by the extraordinary performance over the past week by Nureyev’s grandson Pivotal.

The Cheveley Park Stud-based son of the ill-fated Polar Falcon is the sire of Gary Tanaka's 4yo mare Golden Apples (Pivotal--Loon, by Kaldoun) who became a millionaire with a three-quarter-length victory over Astra (Theatrical--Savannah Slew, by Seattle Slew) and England's Legend (Lure--Mystery Tune, by Commanche Run) in the $700,000 Beverly D. S. (G1) at Arlington Park on August 17.

Across the Atlantic at York on Thursday afternoon the Henry Candy-trained 4yo Kyllachy (Pivotal-Pretty Poppy by Song) emulated the win of his sire and staked his claim as Europe’s champion sprinter when adding the Group 1 Victor Chandler Nunthorpe Stakes to previous victories in the Group 2 Temple Stakes and Group 3 Palace House Stakes.

At Del Mar today the Cheveley Park bred 3yo filly Megahertz (Pivotal--Heavenly Ray, by Rahy) went within a nose of claiming an international Group1/Grade 1 treble for Pivotal when second to Dublino (Lear Fan--Tuscoga, by Theatrical) in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks. Alozaina (Perugino--Latching, by Thatching) a daughter of Collingrove Stud’s perugino was 1 ½-lengths back in third.
Megahertz suffered her first defeat in six starts this year all of which were stakes races. The Bobby Frankel-trained filly won the Honeymoon Breeders' Cup H. (G2), the Providencia S. and the American Oaks where she defeated Dublino on protest.

Coincidently it was last years Del Mar Oaks (G1) that Golden Apples made her successful U.S. debut. She then proved to be one of the most consistent fillies in the business running second in the Queen Elizabeth II Invitational Challenge Cup (G1), winning the Las Palmas H. (G2) and third in the Matriarch S. (G1). Golden Apples opened up her 4yo year with a win in the Santa Ana H. (G2) and then ran second in both the Santa Barbara H. (G2) and Ramona H. (G1).

Cheveley Park Stud bought a fifty-percent interest in Kyllachy following his 4-lengths win in the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Sandown. He was then an unlucky third in the Group 2 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot before his triumph at York.

Pivotal is a strongly made chestnut son of Nureyev’s near black son Polar Falcon, winner of the Group 1 Ladbroke Sprint Cup at Haydock.
Pivotal won 4 races including the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York, running the 5 furlongs in a sizzling 56.53s. A big horse at just under 17 hands Pivotal was Europe’s Champion first season sire in 2000.
