The
breeding interests of Filipino brewing magnate Eduardo Cojuangco are so vast
that it always a delight for pedigree buffs to study the breeding of the Gooree
Stud owned, northern hemisphere bred racehorses in Australia.
Saturday’s Warwick Farm winner History Maker (US) is a case in point. The Gai
Waterhouse-trained 5yo mare won her fourth race from five starts with a 1-3/4
lengths score over Just Imagine (Perugino) with My Czech Chick (Marwina) 1-1/2
lengths away third in the 1300m. Workout World Parramatta Handicap.
The dam of History Maker (US), Sister Sass (Lyphard-Dona Ysidra, by Le Fabuleux)
was a useful enough racemare winning two and placing a further 7 times from 17
starts for earnings of $64,800. More importantly she is a full sister to perhaps
the best horse to carry Cojuangco’s red and black stripes, Manila, who earned
Champion US Turf Horse honours in 1986.
In a stellar racing career over three seasons Manila won 12 times, was second 5
times and unplaced only once while accumulating earnings of $2,692,799. His
victories included the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1), Turf Classic (G1), United
Nations H. (G1) twice and the Arlington Million (G1).
Manila proved a useful stallion whose progeny were better suited on the turf
tracks of Europe however he did sire the top class U.S. turf performer Bien Bien
a four-time Grade 1 winner of over $2.3 million. At the age of 14 Manila was
exported to stand in Turkey.
Another top class performer on turf was Manila’s half-brother Stately Don (Nureyev).
In a short career Stately Don won the Secretariat Stakes (G1) and Hollywood
Derby (G1) after beginning his training in Ireland where his best performance
was a third in the English 2000 Guineas (G1).
The Mr. Prospector stallion Tarlac couldn’t match his half brothers Manila and
Stately Don on the racetrack and proved equally disappointing when installed at
Cojuangco’s Gooree Stud near Mudgee N.S.W.
From an Australian point of view it is interesting to see two other less
successful half brothers to Manila and Stately Don have the same names as two of
Eduardo Cojuangco’s more successful Australian performers. Barkada (Devils
Bag) was a stakes-placed winner of 5 races while Mr. Murphy (Nureyev) won one of
his only two starts. The Australian bred versions were infinitely more
successful with Barkada (Spectrum) and Mr. Murphy (Danehill) both successful at
Group 1 level.
History Maker is by the Fappiano stallion Rubiano, which stands at Lanes End
farm, Kentucky for a fee of $10,000. The winner of the NYRA Mile (G1) as a 4yo,
Rubiano was named Champion Sprinter in the U.S. at 5 where his victories
included the Carter H. (G1) and Vosburgh Stakes (G1). He is out of the Nijinsky
mare Ruby Slippers a half sister to the good racehorse and first class stallion
Glitterman. Little known outside of America Glitterman (Dewan) is the sire of
the champion racemare Glitter Woman who won or placed in 22 of her 23 starts
including 15 Graded events, three at Grade 1 level.
Ruby Slippers and Glitterman are out of the stakes winning In Reality mare Moon
Glitter a full sister to the highly influential stallion Relaunch.
While History Maker (US) still has a lot to offer on the racetrack she will not
lack for opportunity once installed among Gooree’s band of blue-blooded
broodmares.
"We've had very good results with the northern hemisphere-bred mares and
just about all of them with Gai have won," Cojuangco's Australian manager
Andrew Baddock told AAP.
"She'll make a lovely broodmare and hopefully we can get some black type
against her name before she goes to stud,"
That could happen at History Maker’s next start as Gai Waterhouse looks to
step the mare up to Listed stakes class.
"She's a northern hemisphere-bred mare and has just taken a while to play
catch up," said Waterhouse.
"She's a mare that we have found hard to place.
"She can only keep improving and you never know how far she can go."
