 65. Two-Year Old Stakes Winner For Singspiel

21/08/2002

While the first foals of the great international champion Singspiel are just seeing the light of day around stud farms in Australia this spring, the son of In The Wings is rapidly proving one of the most promising stallions in Europe.

SINGSPIEL
The Mark Johnston-trained 2yo colt Bourbonnais (Singspiel-Rose Bourbon by Woodman) took his record to two wins from 3 starts when successful in the seven-furlong Listed Acomb Stakes at York on Tuesday

Johnston described Sheikh Mohammed’s juvenile Bourbonnais as his ‘ best two-year-old at the moment’ after the Singspiel colt’s tenacious win.
The Acomb is one of Britain’s most keenly contested two-year old races – it was won in 1999 by King’s Best.

Despite making all, the colt wanted every yard of the trip but, when strongly challenged by the runner-up, Salcombe (Elmaamul--West Devon, by Gone West), two furlongs from home, he fought back and got up to win by three-quarters of a length. The Royal Lodge (Group 2) is likely to be his next target, and William Hill have given him a 33-1 ante-post quote for next year’s English Derby.

Bourbonnais is from Singspiel’s second crop. His first crop has produced the Group 2 winner and English Derby placegetter Moon Ballad. The early success of Singspiel’s offspring augurs well for the future as they are sure to improve with age.
