He’s
been dubbed the “Rosehill Rocket”, and when you look at Mistegic’s
pedigree it’s easy to see why.
Brian Russell provides a pedigree analysis of one of Australia’s finest
sprinters.
Mistegic has a phenomenal speed pedigree, being a representative of the first
crop of the Woodlands Stud sire Strategic and from the Volcanic Prince mare
Volcanic Mist.
Both Strategic, a winner of seven races at 1200 metres or less including the G1
Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley, and his sire Zeditave and grandsire The Judge
(by Showdown) were also outstanding sprinters.
On top of this, Strategic's dam Sudden Impulse has three Golden Slipper Stakes
winners in her immediate pedigree, being the result of the mating of Luskin Star
(1977 Slipper) with Sweet Embrace (1967 Slipper), a daughter of Todman who won
the first Slipper in 1957.
The speed breeding of Mistegic, a four-year-old gelding who has now won 6 of 18
outings and earned over $1.4 million, continues maternally.
His dam Volcanic Mist won one race at 1100 metres at Canterbury, but showed
class and early maturity with two promising efforts at Randwick in the Widden
Stakes and a fourth in the Gimcrack Stakes.
Volcanic Prince, the sire of Volcanic Mist, was a very fast horse by Pride of
Kellina, a son of 1963 Golden Slipper winner Pago Pago, while the second dam
Superstep is a daughter of the dashing Vain two-year-old County.
Mistegic’s sire Strategic is also a half-brother to Clang, the sire of Golden
Slipper winner Calaway Gal and also of the Gerald Ryan-trained Clangalang, now
winner of two of his four outings following his success at Rosehill on August
17.
A son of the Mr Prospector sire Bellotto, Clang stands at the Willowbend Stud at
Beaudesert in Queensland.
He was also a quality racehorse, winning five stakes races including the
Breeders' Plate at Randwick, the Silver Slipper at Rosehill and the Stanley
Wootton at Moonee Valley. He also earned minor prizemoney in seven Group 1
races.
Clang and Strategic were both bred by the Inghams at Woodlands Stud.
