Saratoga Sale Results; Sunday Silence, Montjeu; BOBS First Winners; Mr Innocent's First Foal; Magic Millions August Sale; Favorite Trick; NZ Stallion Expo.

* CHAMPION sire Storm Cat lifted the second session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearling Sale on August 7 above the ordinary.

The session had three lots beat Tuesday first session top price of $US750,000, led by a a Storm Cat filly out of champion mare Sacahuista for $US1.3 million. The filly is a half sister to Red Ransom’s multiple Group winner Ekraar and Hussonet.

The other big sellers were a colt by Honour and Glory for $US900,000 and a Forestry colt for $US800,000. 

However the session’s high point was the last lot of the day, a full brother to Forestry by Storm Cat that was passed in at $US3.8 million after failing to reach his reserve of $US4 million.

That buy back had a big impact on the bottom line as 44 lots sold for $US11,820,000 at an average of $US268,636, down 32.5% percent from last year’s $US398,000 second session average. 

After the first two sessions, 90 lots had sold for $US22,932,000, down 39% from last year with the average of $US254,800 down 26.9% as the buy back rate increased to 31.8%.

* A filly by former shuttle sire Unbridled's Song brought the highest price of $US750,000 at the opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearling Sale on August 6.

The filly is out of the Mt. Livermore mare Dreamscape, a full sister to champion sprinter and sire Housebuster. 

Purchased by leading owners Bob and Beverly Lewis, the filly is from the family of stakes winner Live Your Dreams.

The Lewises also purchased a filly by boom NZ-based shuttle sire Tale Of The Cat for $US500,000. She is out of the Group placed Java Gold mare Doppio Espresso. 

Other lots at the top of the market included a colt by A.P. Indy out of the stakeswinner Fleet Road for $US700,000 and a colt by promising new sire Grand Slam for $US600,000.

The opening session saw 46 lots sold for a gross of $US11,112,000, a sharp drop of $US6 million from last year's corresponding session when 58 lots brought $US17,725,000. 
The average price of $US241,565 was down 21 percent from last year’s $US305,603. 

* JAPAN"S champion stallion Sunday Silence is improving after undergoing surgery for a third time at the Shadai Horse Clinic.

The Japan Association for International Horse Racing reported the operation, his third this year, was performed after the horse contracted bacterial peritendinitis in his right forelimb. 

The report said while still feelijg some pain, Sunday Silenece was showing no signs of deterioration and had regained a healthy appetite and starting to bite people again, a well-known trait of the great sire.

The 16-year-old son of Halo is able to stand with weight on his infected right leg thanks to a specially made shoe with rubber attached to the heel. 

He still being injected with antibiotics three times a day.

* THE first southern hemisphere-bred foal by champion racehorse Montjeu was born at New Zealand’s Bloomsbury Stud on August 5.

The filly foal is from the Gone West mare, No Reserve, who is owned by UK breeder Phillip Freedman.

Freedman owns Cliveden Stud in England and is the incoming president of the English Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association.

Montjeu, a six-time G1 winner, is the highest rated son of champion sire Sadler’s Wells at stud. 

He stood his first southern hemisphere season at Windsor Park Stud in New Zealand last year, covering around 120 mares, and will return this spring.

* THE new bonus scheme for NSW racing hit top gear with three eligible horses winning races at Randwick on August 5.

The Breeders and Owners Bonus Scheme (BOBS) began on August 1 with the trio of Randwick winners the first paid up horses to collect the bonuses of $10,000 that will be paid to eligible three-year-olds winning metropolitan or provincial for the age group.

The three Randwick winners were the first starter Mystical Lad, by Canny Lad, Cataclysm (Marauding) and Durrah (Langfuhr).

BOBS is open to NSW-trained three-year-olds whose sires are among the 43 nominated for the scheme. 

* A three-quarter brother-in-blood to Australia’s champion two-year-old Victory Vein is among one of the first foals of the new season.

The liver chestnut colt, the first foal by former top class sprinter Mr. Innocent, was born at Queensland’s Wattle Brae Stud.
Mr. Innocent is by Mr. Henrysee, the sire of Victory Vein.

Mr Innocent retired to Wattle Brae Stud last year after winning 14 races including the G1 Doomben Ten Thousand and 10 other stakes events.

Protective, the dam of Victory Vein, will return to Mr. Innocent this spring.

* THE Magic Millions August Mixed Sale at the Gold Coast on August 4 saw 114 lots sold for an aggregate of $616,050.

The top price of $44,000 was paid in the wenaling section for a colt by General Nediym from the Luskin Star mare Filnova. He was purchased by Riverslea Farm of NSW.

The weanling section also featured the sale of another General Nediym colt from a half siustre to G1 winner Castleetown for $31,000 and a Liuon Hunter filly make $26,000.

A Singapore buyer paid the top price of $19,500 among the two-year-olds for a colt by Shovhog out of the Star Way mare Fickle Star while a Danehill Dancer colt sold for $18,000.

Kingston Park Stud of Victoria paid the top broodmare price of $42,500 for a daughter of Flying Spur from the stakesplaced Secreto mare Mezzanella.

Kuri Bay, an winning Summer Squall mare who is a half sister to three stakeswinners, made $40,000.

* COLLINGROVE Stud’s US Horse of the Year Favorite Trick sired his first winner in America on July 31.

Favourite One got the son of Phone Trick off the mark when he won at Laurel Park in Washington over seven furlongs.

Favorite Trick was unbeaten in eight starts as a two-year-old in 1997 and became the first juvenile Horse of the Year since the legendary Secretariat in 1972.

His major victories included the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, G1 Hopeful Stakes, G2 Breeders' Futurity, G2 Saratoga Special Stakes and G3 Bashford Manor Stakes.

At three he also won four stakes races including the G2 Keeneland Breeders' Cup Mile, G2 Jim Dandy Stakes and G3 Swale Stakes.

He had already sired a Group placed runner with Favorite One his first winner from 12 runners.

* A big selection of New Zealand’s leading sires will be on show at the NZ Bloodstock Stallion Expo at Karaka on August 25.

The Expo presents a unique opportunity for breeders and the general public to view many of NZ’s proven sires along with exciting new shuttle arrivals.

The annual event is arranged by the Auckland branch of the NZTBA and all proceeds raised go to the Auckland NZTBA to be put to good use for our industry.
