quality two year olds generating a record gross of $4,861,500.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS YEAR’S CATALOGUE
The overwhelming success achieved at last year's Australian Breeze Up Sale has
attracted a strong response from vendors eager to support Australia's premier
auction for two year olds in training.
The sale provides the ideal opportunity to gain entry into Australia's richest
juvenile events, with the majority of horses eligible for the San Miguel William
Inglis Race Series, Golden Slipper or Magic Millions races. Buyers will have an
exciting selection of 169 youngsters to choose from, featuring the progeny of
many of our leading stallions as well as a host of popular newcomers.
Sires represented at Breeze Up this year include: Anabaa (USA), Canny Lad,
Danehill (USA), Danzero, Encosta de Lago, End Sweep (USA), Flying Spur, Gilded
Time (USA), Grand Lodge (USA), Lion Hunter, Marauding (NZ), Marscay, Octagonal
(NZ), Peintre Celebre (USA), Perugino (USA), Quest for Fame (GB), Red Ransom
(USA), Rory's Jester, Rubiton, Snippets, Spectrum (IRE), Spinning World (USA),
Strategic, Thunder Gulch (USA), Zeditave, etc.
World renowned sire DANEHILL (USA) continued to dominate Australian racing this
season, claiming his sixth champion sires title in yet another demonstration of
why his presence will be so sorely missed here this spring.
The sale has two Danehill (USA) colts that are sure to win admirers, an athletic
bay from Alpine Spirit, an unraced half-sister to classy galloper Schubert, from
the family of champion first season sire Lion Hunter; also a handsome brown from
the Grey Dawn mare Soon Ripe (USA), a half-sister to American stakes-winner Fast
Account.
Several sons of Danehill have representation including: Danehill Dancer (IRE),
Danewin, Danzero, Desert King (IRE), Flying Spur, Lion Hunter, North Reef (IRE),
etc.
Highlights include a smart grey colt by FLYING SPUR from Kilter, a half-sister
to Black Opal winner Speed Week; a strapping bay colt by LION HUNTER from the
good producer Gentle Marchesa; and a brown gelding by DESERT KING (IRE) from the
Group One winner Satin Sand, this fellow is a three-quarter brother to South
African stakes-winner Da-Man, who now campaigns successfully in Hong Kong under
the name of V-Can.
Everybody's favourite sire SNIPPETS has another classy draft (7) that are sure
to suit the requirements of both international and domestic buyers. Snippets
produced the top priced colt ($140,000) at the 1999 Breeze Up Sale, a talented
type who went on to race with great success in Hong Kong as Merry Merry, winning
five races and nearly $A700,000.
The Snippets draft includes a racy brown colt from well related mare Voile au
Vent (FR); a strongly built chestnut colt from good racemare Gala Ball; and a
colt from the placed Marscay mare Maybelline, from the family of stakes-winning
Hong Kong sprinter miler Solid Contact, who is also by Snippets.
A string of recent winners highlighted by boom colt Thorn Park, has placed the
spotlight on promising young sire SPINNING WORLD (USA) and buyers will be
pleased to find a quality selection (5) of his youngsters at Breeze Up.
Star attraction will undoubtedly be the full brother to spring staying prospect
Al Megdam, himself purchased at this sale last year for $160,000; also a
half-brother to stakes-placed filly Princess Dehere, from From the Palace (NZ);
and a smart bay filly from good producer It's Casual.
It seems there is nothing that improves a stallion's prospects more than an
untimely demise and for ill-fated sire END SWEEP (USA), who's oldest Australian
progeny have just turned two, we will soon find out if the adage rings true.
End Sweep (USA) is consistently among the leading sires in the US, and has some
stylish youngsters (5) on show here including: a well grown colt from winning
Zabeel mare Zebizan (NZ), a full sister to Adelaide Cup winer Cronus and classy
stayer Pravda; also a big strong chestnut colt from the Nijinsky mare Avietwo
(IRE).
ADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
Of the many young stallions who's progeny will grace our racetracks for the
first time this spring, few have been as well received as the proven American
visitor GILDED TIME (USA). A former champion two year old, he has carved out an
enviable reputation for producing precocious sprinter milers and buyers can
expect a quick return on his progeny.
He has just the two representatives at Breeze Up, both chestnut colts like
himself. One from the Rory's Jester stakes-winner Fluoro, dam of smart Hong Kong
runner Inca Rose; the other from Avenue Road, a full sister to grand galloper
Shaftesbury Avenue.
Outstanding sire CANNY LAD has just the one two year old, but the horse in
question is guaranteed to spark plenty of interest, being the first foal from
superior producer Salieiri's Pride that does not result from a mating with
Yallah Prince. Her earlier foals include stakes-placed performers Yallah King
and Yallah's Star, as well as four other metropolitan winners. Just think what
she'll produce to a Group One class sire like Canny Lad!
RED RANSOM (USA) is another of the proven American based sires, who's Australian
progeny will debut in coming months. His yearlings averaged $109,212 at the
sales earlier this year, finding favour with many of our leading trainers.
Discerning buyers will be quick to check out the three bay colts by Red Ransom
(USA) on offer at Breeze Up; a full brother to American Group Three winner
Petrouchka, from Mina's Sport (Can); an athletic colt from young American mare
Quiet Aggie (USA), a daughter of renowned broodmare sire Alleged; and a likely
runner from the speedy Rory's Jester mare Trickster.
The Eight Carat (GB) dynasty is without peer in this part of the world and a
colt from THE family, by champion racehorse PEINTRE CELEBRE (USA) has got to
rate his share of attention. The youngster is from the Star Way (GB) mare Sister
St Klaire, a three-quarter sister to Group One winning trio Bonanova, Telesto
and Fraternity.
STRATEGIC, ENCOSTA DE LAGO and OCTAGONAL (NZ) are three young sires who have
made an immediate impact and look set for long and fruitful careers. We have
just one of each, but the trio are sure to be on the must inspect list for the
majority of buyers.
The Encosta de Lago colt is a half-brother to Group One winner Sober Suit and
stakes-placed juvenile Titanic Rose, but far more importantly he is a full
brother to the unbeaten Titanic Jack, who looms as a genuine big race contender
this spring.
Octagonal (NZ) has a near black colt from the Danehill (USA) mare Hakone, while
Strategic's lone colt is a muscular chestnut from Celebration Star, the dam of
two metropolitan winners.
Evergreen sire RORY'S JESTER continues to churn out the winners and there is
never any shortage of buyers to put their hand up for his stock. His five Breeze
Up youngsters include a half-brother to Group Two winner Princess D'or, from Pop
Artist; the first living foal, a bay colt, from brilliant Snippets mare Always
Divine, winner of the MVRC Moet & Chandon Stakes Gr 2; and a three-quarter
brother to stakes-winner Miss Prospect, from talented racemare Miss Peron.
A filly from the last crop of MARSCAY is always going to be a valuable
acquisition, particularly when she comes from a crackerjack European family. Our
lone Marscay is a strongly built bay filly, typical of the Marscay breed, from
the Persian Bold mare Classic Parisian (IRE).
Successful young shuttle sire ANABAA (USA) has proven to be a good source of
quality runners, with stakes-winners throughout the world including several very
smart gallopers in Hong Kong. His draft for Breeze Up (5) includes; a neat brown
colt from Am Wild (USA), a three-quarter sister to stakes-winners Rue de Pal and
Am Capable; and a classy filly from the metropolitan winning Marscay mare
Divine.
