Leading
Australian equine veterinarians will attend a Yearling Radiographic Seminar at
Sydney University on August 18 ahead of next year’s introduction of a
nationwide X-ray repository system at Australia’s major yearling sales.
The seminar, organized by the Rural Industries Research and Development
Corporation in conjunction with Aushorse and Magic Millions, will feature Dr Jim
Morehead as the keynote speaker.
Dr Morehead has been resident veterinarian at Three Chimney’s Farm in Kentucky
since 1999 and is acknowledged as an authority on radiographs in yearlings.
He will outline how the repository system works at Keeneland in Kentucky and
will also speak on the significance of lesions seen on radiographs to racetrack
performance.
From 1985 to 1990, Dr Morehead was with Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital of
Lexington, and since 1990 has owned Equine Medical Associates PSC in Lexington.
He is a member of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, the Farm
Managers' Club, the American Association of Equine Practitioners, and the
Kentucky Association of Equine Practitioners.
Randwick Equine Centre surgeon Dr Jonathan Lumsden will provide a
veterinarians’ perspective and Dr Alistair MacLean will speak on the topic of
X-raying yearlings for Hong Kong.
Aushorse director John Kelly, who is chairman of the joint Aushorse –
Thoroughbred Breeders’ Australia sub-committee on yearling X-rays, will
provide a vendor perspective.
“The X-ray repository is not a guarantee on the future soundness of a horse.
It is more information for the buyer to make an informed decision before
purchase,” said Kelly.
“Vendors have to keep in mind the way we introduce the repository system is
going to have an enormous impact on the selling of thoroughbred horses, thus
impacting on the future of all breeders,” he said.
“Obviously, Keeneland has had a repository system in place for some years, and
we hope to benefit from the learning curve experienced there, minimizing any
negative effect on our market as a result of introducing a repository system.”
