 47. Darley Secures New Hunter Base

13/08/2002

Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum’s Darley Group has confirmed the purchase of Kelvinside Stud in the Hunter Valley as the future base for its breeding operations in Australia.

Kelvinside was established almost 30 years ago by former
leading jockey Hjilton Cope, The property is located on the
Hunter River at the southern end of the Segenhoe Valley and is regarded as one of the finest agistment farms in the Hunter region.

Sheikh Mohammed stepped up his involvement in Australian breeding and racing last year when he stood four UK-based Darley sires at Collingrove Stud at Sandy Hollow under a lease arrangement.

Another four Darley stallions will stand at Collingrove this spring - Fantastic Light, Xaar, Carnegie and Lujain.

However next year the Darley imports will be located at Kelvinside, which will be set up as a stallion station with a new stallion complex to accommodate the shuttle sires.

Hilton Cope will remain at Kelvinside for another six months before moving to a smaller farm adjacent the property.

Brian Russell reports that the Hunter Valley breeding scene is taking on a real international flavour as a Chinese owner-breeder has rebuilt Kelvinside’s neighbouring Brooklyn Lodge, Malayan interests have redeveloped the historic Kia Ora Stud, the former Segenhoe Stud now known as Vinery belongs to a German breeder, Coolmore Stud is controlled from Ireland and Emirates Park Stud is under Dubai ownership.
