 39. First Stakes Win For undefeated Marju Filly

11/08/2002

The James Fanshawe-trained two-year old filly Soviet Song kept her unbeaten record intact with a runaway three-lengths win in the Listed Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.

MARJU
The race proved significant, as the placegetters were all daughters of stallions that will be available to Australian breeders this season. The promising winner is the latest stakes performer for Collingrove Stud’s Last Tycoon stallion Marju. The winner of her only two racetrack appearances Soviet Song defeated the Grand Lodge filly Summitville, a three-length winner at Newmarket at her previous start, with the Zafonic filly Miss Assertive five-lengths back in third place on the very testing soft track.

Soviet Song is the second foal of the winning Soviet Star mare Kalinka a daughter of the Tromos mare Tralthee, winner of the Rockfel Stakes (LR) at two and the Lupe Stakes (LR) at three. Her first foal Baralinka, a daughter of former Widden stallion Barathea won three of her first four starts and finished second at Yarmouth three weeks ago.

Described by James Fanshawe as the one of the nicest of his 26 two-year olds after winning first up at Kempton, Soviet Song could have her next start in the Group 1 Fillies Mile at Ascot.
