 36. Guarded Optimism On Sunday Silence

8/08/2002

The Japan Association for International Horse racing has issued a press release on the health of 16-year-old champion Japanese stallion Sunday Silence who is steadily recovering after undergoing emergency surgery for the third time on July the 18th.

SUNDAY SILENCE
The operation was performed at the Shadai Horse Clinic in Tomakomai after the horse contracted bacterial peritendinitis in its right forelimb. The horse is now able to stand on the leg and has returned to the normal accommodations in the stable.

Eisuke Tokutake of the Shadai Stallion Station in Hayakita, Hokkaido, where the horse is stabled, says that there are sure indications of recovery.
"He's a clever horse, and when his leg feels tired he lies down to rest. He still appears to feel pain in the affected area, but there doesn't seem to be any deterioration.
"Because the pain has eased, he has regained a healthy appetite, and that alone, is fantastic news.
"Another good sign is that he has started to bite people again, which is very much like him."

The affected area has been injected with antibiotics three times a day since the operation, but the frequency of the injections may be reduced, if the horse continues its present rate of recovery. A major worry was that laminitis could develop. However, there appears to be no danger of complications at the present. The horse is now able to stand with weight on its right forelimb, thanks to a specially-made horseshoe with rubber attached to the heel.
