 33. Storm Cat Colt Passed for US$3.8 million

08/08/2002

As has become usual on the American Sales Circuit the champion sire Storm Cat has made the headlines, this time during the second session of the Fasig-Tipton Yearling Sale at Saratoga.

While he provided the sales topper, a filly half sister to the brilliant Group winner Ekraar, a short time later his star of the session, a colt, was passed for a staggering US$3.8 million (a little over AUS$7m).

Bidding for both yearlings kicked off at the magical seven figure mark. The first of the Storm Cat youngsters to enter the ring was the eventual topper, the chestnut filly from Sacahuista, a Group One winner by Raja Baba.

The filly, who was offered by Eaton Sales, was knocked down to John Sikura of Hill 'n' Dale Farms for US$1.3m (AUS$2.4m).

Just minutes later the chestnut colt by Storm Cat and out of Shared Interest, a Group One winner, entered the ring. Bidding again started at $1 million, but after bidding stalled at $3.8 million the colt was passed. The colt is a full brother to Group One winners Forestry (a promising young stallion) and Cash Run.

In total some 44 horses were sold during the session for a gross of US$11.82m (AUS$22m) and an average of US$398,000 (AUS$737,000).

After two sessions the sale has grossed US$22,932,000 (AUS$42,466,000), with a sale average of US$254,800 (AUS$471,850). This year's average has slipped some 26.8 per cent, while the media has fallen 11 per cent.
