 24. King Of The Kids

06/08/2002

With 10 winners from 27 runners Coolmore Stud’s English Two Thousand Guineas winner King Of Kings produced an amazing burst of two-year old winners towards the end of the Australian season. The first northern hemisphere crop of the son of Sadler’s Wells is paralleling that success. As they enter the business end of the season the progeny of King of Kings are winning with regularity.

KING OF KINGS
Consider the success enjoyed in the first week of August. Geminiani became the fifth winner for King Of Kings when successful on debut in the 7-furlong fillies maiden at the Glorious Goodwood meeting on August1.
On August 4 Late Claim improved on his second at Ayr when successful in the European Breeders Fund Maiden Stakes at Chester. Following him home 2 ½-lengths back was Awwal Marra a King Of Kings filly having her first start.
The following day at Naas the Aidan O’Brien-trained King Of Kings colt Macedonian King edged out his stablemate Powerscourt (Sadler’s Wells) in the Orpen European Breeders Fund Maiden. "They are two nice horses and the winner will step up to a Listed race," said O’Brien.

Even though King Of Kings stood at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud, Kentucky it’s not surprising that the powerfully built bay is enjoying the majority of his early success on the turf tracks of Europe. The winner of 4 of his 5 starts at two including the Group 1 national Stakes, King Of Kings only raced one more time after his stunning win in the English 2000 Guineas before taking up stud duties in Australia.

Barry Hills trains both Geminiani and Late Claim and has a high opinion of both. " Geminiani has been working well and she looks to have a touch of class and the size and scope to go with it. We will have tro aim high now." She will be aimed for the Gr.1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at The Curragh.
Geminiani is out of the winning Darshaan mare Tadkiyra who is a half-sister to five Stakes winners including Group winners Tassmoun, Tashtiya and Tashkourgan.

Late Claim is the first foal of the placed Irish River mare Irish Flare, a three-quarter sister to the mighty racemare Hatoof, winner of the English 1000 Guineas (G1), Dubai Champion Stakes (G1) and Beverley D Stakes (G1).

Macedonian King is the fifth foal of the Arctic Tern mare Arctic Lead whose dam La Nobleza (Damascus) is a half sister to stakes winners I Will Follow (dam of champion racehorse and sire Rainbow Quest), Broodmare Of The Year, Slightly Dangerous (dam of champions Commander In Chief and Warning), and the unraced Idyllic (dam of Collingrove Stud’s high-class stallion Scenic).

King Of Kings has also sired eight placegetters including Etruscan King, who was second in the Listed Tyros Stakes at The Curragh, beaten a head by Ballydoyle’s $6.4million purchase Van Nistelrooy.
