 22. Arrowfield Bred Wins Grade 2 At Saratoga

05/08/2002

Arrowfield Stud’s John Messara had the distinction of breeding a Grade 2 winner at the famous Saratoga meet in America today. Quest Star (Broad Brush-Tinaca) was rewarded for his consistency when he broke through for his first graded stakes win in the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Handicap (G2).

Arrowfield Stud in partnership with Mr John Leaver purchased Tinaca carrying the future stakes winner. A lightly raced daughter of Manila (Lyphard), Tinaca is a half-sister to the courageous filly Mariah’s Storm (Rahy) who overcame a serious leg injury as a two-year old to win 10 races and $724,895. Her first mating to Storm Cat produced the European Horse Of The Year, Giant’s Causeway, which begins his Australian career at Coolmore Stud this spring.

After winning a maiden at Gulfstream Park in January Quest Star was placed in the Hawthorne Derby (G3), Jefferson Cup S. (G3), Kent Breeders' Cup S. (G3) and O.B.S. Championship Stakes before his breakthrough at Saratoga. The three-year old has started 11 times for 2 wins, 4 seconds and 3 thirds for earnings of $250,060.

Arrowfield sold Quest Star as a yearling through Taylor Made Sales Agency at the Keeneland September yearling for $40,000. Quest Star made $150,000 when re-offered at the OBS March two-year-old in training sale.

Tinaca visited champion Japanese stallion Sunday Silence, subsequently foaling a colt that sold for $1.1 million to agent Rob McAnulty at the 2002 Easter Yearling Sale. Tinaca has an End Sweep yearling colt and is currently in foal to leading sire Flying Spur.

“We are looking forward to Tinaca foaling down in the next month. If we get a Flying Spur filly then we might look at sending her back into a Northern Hemisphere program,” said Arrowfield’s Bloodstock Manager Byron Rogers.
