 14. John Singleton's mares sell well at Gold Coast sale

Media magnate John Singleton topped the mare section of the Magic Millions mixed sale at the Gold Coast on August 4 when he secured $42,500 for the1998 foaled Sydney winner Summer Alice, a daughter of the Danehill Golden Slipper winner Flying Spur.

Out of an Italian stakes placed importation, Mezzanella, and inbred to Northern Dancer, Summer Alice was bought by KingstonTown's breeder-owner David Hains for his Kingston Park Stud in Victoria and was one of five young mares offered through Singleton's Strawberry Hill Stud, Mt White, NSW. Another of them, the imported South Australian provincial winner Kuri Bay, realised $40,000.

A1998 produced daughter of Summer Squall, a horse which attoned for a second in the Kentucky Derby by siring the1999 winner of this race, Charismatic, Kuri Bay was acquired by Stuart Ramsey's Northern NSW located Ramsey Pastoral Company. Mr Ramsey has become a sire owner this year, arranging for his superbly bred Danehill horse Oarsman to stand at the Raheen Stud at Gladfield near Warwick in Queensland.

The highest price of the sale had been achieved earlier in the day when a colt by Queensland bred champion General Nediym which had become a yearling on August 1 was purchased by Steve Irwin's Riverslea Farm Stud near Muswellbrook in the Hunter Valley for $44,000.

Another colt by the Eliza Park Stud Kerrie,Victoria based General Nediym sold for $31,000.The purchaser Derry Park, Queensland, also went to $26,000 to secure a filly by sensational Danehill sire Lion Hunter and from a close relation to Group1 winner Special Dane offered through the Oaklands Stud,Toowoomba, while Washpool Thoroughbreds spent $23,000 in acquiring a colt by the Danehill1998 Golden Slipper runner up Shovhog, one of the young sires at the Widden Stud
