Ann Raymond, a horse breeder for sixty years, is the owner and breeder of the promising three-year-old sprinter Cryptique, a filly which collected her seventh successive Sydney prize cheque when she won at Warwick Farm on July 31.
Miss Raymond has been in thoroughbred breeding all her life and for many years ran her late father's leading Victorian stud, St Alban's at Geelong. In more recent years she has owned the Sledmere Stud at Scone. Sledmere was originally established in1918 by a partnership of her father and Sydney businessman Hugh Denison but they split up in the mid1920s.
One of the best horses bred by Miss Raymond has been Gold Brose, a half-brother to Cryptique. A dashing two-year-old and sprinter, Gold Brose got off to a great start as a sire in New Zealand but died prematurely.
Miss Raymond's latest winner,Cryptique, is by one of the most successful dual hemisphere sires, the Yarraman Park Stud, Scone visitor Spectrum, and is the seventh foal and winner from the good class Sydney sprinter Cryptic Verse, a daughter of the Nijinsky sire Yeats.
The success of Cryptique in Sydney came only a few days after an Ireland bred son of Spectrum produced by another Nijinsky line mare annexed England's premier weight-for-age test, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Royal Ascot. Now being acclaimed as possibly the best older horse in Europe, he is the first crop four-year-old Golan.
Successful at three in the English Two Thousand Guineas, runnerup in the English Derby, third in the Irish Derby and fourth in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Golan is the second major winner at Royal Ascot this year for Spectrum, the other being the high class sprinter Just James.
Winner of the Jersey Stakes on this great course in June, Just James is from a daughter of Fairy King, a sire who visited the Hunter Valley several times and who has left quite a few females behind. As Fairy King is a close relation toYeats and both of them are from the male line of Northern Dancer, Just James has a lot in his pedigree in common with the one that produced Cryptique.
