 23. Hunter Valley horseman's big weekend

08/04/2002

William Inglis followed the Australian Easter Yearling sale with the staging at the Randwick headquarters on Sunday of their second annual Sires' Produce yearling sale, a more modest market. It held steady with the results of the first sale last year with139 lots grossing $3,440,500 and averaging $24,752.

Among the yearlings to find buyers were over seventy at prices of $20,000 or less while the top end saw six sell in the $70,000 to $90,000 range. The latter price, the high of the sale, was for a Grand Lodge colt bought off Riverslea Farm,Wybong,Muswellbrook by James Bester Bloodstock.

Acting for a client, Riverslea Farm is the new breeding and agistment operation set up by very experienced young horseman Steve Irwin and his wife Karen. They had a very enjoyable weekend as Gold Brose, a half-brother to their new Kenmare sire Dyslexia, had another Group One winner in New Zealand in the shape of Saturday's Sires' Produce Stakes winner Grout.

Gold Brose, a brilliant racehorse who died just when he was being established as a sire, and Dyslexia were both bred by Anne Raymond at her Sledmere Stud, Scone.

The Sires' Produce Stakes winning Grout also has maternal connections with the Hunter Valley, being from Kaapstad Glamour, a mare by Octagonal's three-quarter brother Kaapstad and from the Twig Moss Sydney winner Twiggy Kima.

Fixed Star, the Biscay mare who produced Twiggy Kima, was a half-sister to the Wakefield Stud, Scone bred Melbourne Cup winner Subzero. Her dam,the imported American Wiley Trade, was a three-quarter sister to the dam of the Biscay Golden Slipper and champion sire Marscay.
