 20. Notable US Double For Australia

07/04/2002

Australian connections came to the fore in two US Group One races on April 6.

At Keenland, Dehere filly Take Charge Lady dominated classic hopefuls in the G1 Ashland Stakes, underlining again what a boost the return to Australia of her sire next spring will be for local breeding.

At Oaklawn Park Azeri, a product of the Australian-bred

Ahonoora mare Zodiac Miss, won her second successive G1 race in the Apple Blossom Handicap to earn recognition as the current top performing distaffer in the US.

Take Charge Lady, who has now won six of her eight starts and in excess of $US1 million prizemoney, is now heading for the G1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs

She is the second foal from the unraced Rubiano mare Felicita, her first being the stakes winner Eventail. She ahs since produced an unraced juvenile full sister to Take Charge Lady and a yearling colt by Capote.

Azeri, by Jade Hunter, did not begin racing until last November and was has now won five of her six starts and more than $US600,000.

She was bred by the late Allen Paulsen, who purchased Group winner Zodiac Miss from Australia as a three-year-old.

Zodiac Miss died in 1999 with her Theatrical filly but has left an unraced older half brother to Azeri by Blushing John.
