 02. Inglis predicts bumper sale

02/04/2002

The first session of today's Australian Easter Yearling sale boded well for the final two days, William Inglis and Son managing director Reg Inglis predicted.

Inglis said today's top price of $1.2 million could well be surpassed and although the clearance rate of 80 per cent was down on the overall last year, this was bound to improve.
Of 220 lots, 156 were sold at an average of $156,266.

"It was very satisfactory for the first day and I'm confident it will improve over the next two sessions," Inglis said.

"I'm delighted with the top price of $1.2 million but I don't think that will be the sale topper by any means.

"We have several with the potential to make more."

Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Australia paid $1.2 million for a Sunday Silence colt, surpassing last year's top price of $1.1 million but short of the $1.5 million paid for subsequent Group One winner Viking Ruler in 2000.

Acting as agent, William Inglis bought today's highest-priced filly, paying $925,000 on behalf of an undisclosed overseas client for the Sunday Silence-Grilse yearling.

Day one:
Top colt: $1.2 million
Top filly: $925,000
Lots sold: 156
Average: $156,266
Clearance: 80 per cent
