 13. Easter Yearling Sale - Summary

04/04/2002

The 2002 Australian Easter Yearling Sale has renewed confidence in the Australian breeding industry, according to William Inglis and Son managing director Reg Inglis.

Inglis saw the results achieved over the three-day sale as a vote of confidence for the Australian product following a hesitant start to the selling season in the wake of the September 11 tragedy in New York.

"It's a wonderful result considering that the lead-in sales were all down," Inglis said.

"It was great to see two of our smaller vendors produce the highest priced colt and filly of the sale, and the success of the Sunday Silence horses has been a real highlight."

The Easter sale grossed $64.955 million for an average of $160,780 from 404 of the 550 lots in the catalogue sold, achieving a clearnace rate of 81 percent.

Last year the average was $167,214 from an identical 404 lots sold, but this year's final session provided a great climax as the 158 lots sold averaged a massive $168,892.

SUnday SIlence topped the sires averages with his five sold brining $4.1 million at an average of $820,000.

Danehill's 43 yearlings sold averaged $382,674 while New Zealand-based Zabeel had 35 sold at an average of $215,571

Inglis said the big spending by Darley Australia, Gooree Stud and Coolmore Stud, supported by buyers from Asia and South Africa, emphasised Australia's place in the global market.

"This is an international sale and will continue to be so," he said.
